CCTA 2014 Annual Meeting Another Resounding Success

2014-mtg-ban.png

Much of the success of the 2014 Annual Meeting can be attributed to the five dynamic speakers who presented innovative, educational, and enlightening information during their presentations.

Keynote Speaker Cheng Wu of Azuki Systems fascinated the audience with his vision of "Surviving the Cloud TV Tsunami". Andres Capdevila of Harmonic Inc. presented an abstract on "Ultra High Definition TV". Daniel Howard of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers discussed "HFC Network Readiness for DOCSIS 3.1".

Noted author and speaker Barry Mahergave invaluable advice on "Slicing through the Noise: Powerful Communication for Leadership and Professional Success", and Aaron Wesley Means of Activate Business Solutions led a lively session on "Growing Your Business with Engagement Marketing".

We are very grateful for each individual's contribution to the 2014 Annual Meeting.

A very big THANK YOU to the companies that sponsored events or provided items for the 2014 Annual Meeting. These generous corporate friends are:

What a way to end January! If you were lucky enough to attend the CCTA's 2014 Annual Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, AND avoid the record-setting U.S. blizzard, then you can be considered a strategic and planning genius! You were one of the 381 wise individuals who traveled to the Caribbean from January 27 to 29 to participate in the CCTA's 31st Annual Meeting, which was the second largest in the organization's history. Way to go!

From beginning to end, the "Caribbean Show" was crammed with top-notch speakers, exhibitions, and social events designed for networking. There were 183 companies or organizations in attendance, representing 28 distinct nations or jurisdictions in North America, South America, Europe and the Caribbean. The vibe was upbeat and non-stop, just like the lively Puerto Rican salsa that played throughout the meeting.

The only sad moment came during the Annual Membership Meeting, when it was announced that Bill Ewing, Managing Director of The Cable St. Kitts, was retiring from the CCTA Board of Directors. After Bill's farewell comments, Alan Smith of Bermuda CableVision said, "There isn't a dry eye in the house", and that was exactly right.

Bill has been active in the CCTA for more than 20 years and has served as Chair four times. He has been dedicated to the association, and the cable industry in the Caribbean. He will definitely be missed by everyone associated with the CCTA. In tribute to Bill, Mike Carrosquilla of Choice Cable TV sang "My Way" at the Farewell Cocktail Party.

Congratulations to members of the new Board of Directors, who were elected during the meeting: Chair David Burrows of Cable Bahamas; Vice Chair and Chair Elect Terry Roberson of Bermuda CableVision; Past Chair Beulah Jonis of St. Maarten Cable TV; Director and Treasurer Mike Carrosquilla of Choice Cable TV (Puerto Rico); Director Andrew Greene of Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (Barbados); Director Gaby Palerm of Liberty Cablevision of Puerto Rico; Director Raul Ponson of SETAR N.V. (Aruba); Associate Director Patrick Harrell of Align Broadcasting; and Associate Director John T. Kurpinski, Sr. of Tarpon Communications.

Of course, the big question is “Where will the 2015 Annual Meeting be held?” And the answer is, we still don't know. We're soliciting proposals from hotels throughout the region and will make an announcement on the 2015 site as soon as we can. Keep posted, monitor our website at www.cctanet.com, and continue to read the CCTA Wavelengths newsletters for the latest about the association and its activities. Oh, and for those of you who don't happen to live in the Caribbean, keep warm!

GOOD NEWS! CCTA 2014 Meeting Advance Hotel and Registration Rates extended to January 17!

2014-mtg-ban.png

Due to challenges with weather delays and holiday schedules, we've extended the deadline for the considerably discounted advance hotel room rate of $199 per night (plus taxes and fees), AND special advance registration fees, through January 17. If you haven't already signed up, now is your chance to immerse yourself in the newest technology and latest critical updates in the field of cable and telecommunications (as well as the warm sunshine and welcoming hospitality of our host island, Puerto Rico!). You won't want to miss the year's most important meeting or the opportunity to connect with current industry associates, meet new entrants into the Caribbean market, and hear from some of the country's leading experts. But don't procrastinate, because the extended discounted rates offer ends on January 17... after which, the very attractive advance registration rates will be "adios" forever.

To refresh your memory, here's the line-up of our outstanding speakers to date (with additional presenters' confirmations pending):

Did you know...

... that the biggest holiday of the year on Puerto Rico is Three Kings' Day or "Día de los Tres Reyes Magos"? This holiday, which falls on January 6th each year, is bigger than Christmas for children, for it is on this eve that they will receive their gifts. The tradition is based on the Three Kings visiting the Christ Child and bearing him gifts. Children collect hay, straw or grass and place it in boxes or containers under their beds. This gesture is a gift of food for the Kings' horses (since there are no camels on Puerto Rico) while they rest in between deliveries. If a child has been good, he or she will receive candies, sweets or toys. However, if a child has been naughty, a lump of dirt or charcoal will be the reward. This tradition is much older than that of Santa's visit on Christmas Eve.

* Sponsors and Exhibitors listed are confirmed as of December 25.

2014-mtg-ban.png

The CCTA is pleased to announce that the schedule of speakers and sessions for the 2014 Annual Meeting has been finalized, with the addition of two Technical Topics!

Joining Chin-Cheng Wu, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Azuki Systems, Barry Maher, nationally-known author and speaker, and Aaron Wesley Means, dynamic speaker and owner of the Activate marketing firm, are Andres Capdevila and Daniel Howard.

Mr. Capdevila, the Pre-Sales Group Manager of the Caribbean and Latin American region for Harmonic, Inc., will present an abstract on "Ultra High Definition Television" on Tuesday, January 28.

Mr. Howard, who is the Senior Vice President of Engineering and Chief Technical Officer of the SCTE, will discuss "HFC Network Readiness for DOCSIS 3.1" during his session on Wednesday, January 29.

The great room rate of $199 plus taxes and fees, at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino, expires on January 4; another reason to hit the link attached to this message and make your hotel reservations. Links to all documents for registering, exhibiting, sponsoring or securing a spot in the Highlights sessions are provided here.

Please review the Sponsorship Opportunities form and then contact the Executive Director about availabilities. All sponsors are acknowledged in the CCTA's printed materials, during events, and on signs and banners displayed prominently throughout the Annual Meeting venue.

Be on the lookout for future messages from the CCTA about the 2014 Annual Meeting. Thank you, and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

... that Puerto Rico has over 270 miles of beaches? It's not just the sheer volume of beachfront that makes Puerto Rico a favorite Caribbean destination, but the quality and variety. Around the island you can find beaches with unusual black magnetic sand, beaches in secluded spots, public beaches and those along resort-front property, and those known for surfing. Puerto Rico has a tremendous selection of beaches, and you should be able to find one that suits you perfectly!
